BIR Explained

BIR stands for Brief Interim Report.

At de Ferrers these are issued at least twice a year to all students, providing parents and students with up to date information on their progress in all subjects.

Years 7 & 8

  • First BIR issued in late December and contains current Key Stage 3 SAT levels as well as effort and achievement grades.
  • Second BIR is issued in late June and contains the updated Key Stage 3 levels as well as an examination mark in each subject. This examination mark is standardised for ease of comparison.
  • All standardised marks are expressed as a percentage; have a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 20.

Year 9

  • First BIR is issued in late December and contains current Key Stage 3 SAT levels as well as effort and achievement grades.
  • Second BIR is issued in late July and contains the actual SAT grades and Teacher Assessments awarded at the end of Key Stage 3.

Year 10

  • First BIR is issued in late December and contains forecast GCSE results in all subjects.
  • Second BIR is issued late in the academic year and updates the forecast grades given in the first BIR.

Year 11

  • First BIR is issued in the first week of September and enables students and parents to examine the most recent set of forecast grades.

Year 12

  • BIRs are completed by students and staff on a regular basis throughout the year. The grades summarise effort, achievement, homework grades, attendance and an indication of the grade which can be expected.

Year 13

  • BIRs are completed by students and staff on a regular basis throughout the year. The grades summarise effort, achievement, homework grades, attendance and an indication of the grade which can be expected.
