Technology Show 2008

Last June saw the 8th Annual Technology Show at de Ferrers, an opportunity to show students and visitors how new technology can improve learning experiences. This year’s show was bigger and better than ever, with Art and Gifted & Talented students now joining Science, Maths, ICT and Design & Technology in organising workshops. Visitors included over 350 students and staff from our primary partner schools, parents and a number of headteachers.
Mr O Hare wins his Cook-Off
One of the major highlights this year was ‘Ready, Steady, Cook-Off’, the staff versus student cooking competition.

9 members of staff and 12 students prepared meals in front of a live audience and put their menu to the taste test! It was a tough competition, with a very high standard of cooking, and even some Italian singing! The final result was staff 6, students 3. You can find some of the menus and photographs on the VLE. Well done to everyone that gave up their time and to Mrs Wildman, Mr Brown and Tom Goodall for acting as compares.

Some other highlights and events this year included:

  • Demonstrations in the new sports hall of how ICT can enhance sports performance in golf, cricket, trampolining and shooting.
  • A showcase of how Y10 triple science students have used their 10th hour to produce original group research projects
  • A GPS treasure hunt using satellite navigation
  • A workshop on using Photoshop to digitally manipulate images in Art
  • The Design & Technology chocolate production line for key stage 2 students
  • Video-conferencing relay quiz in Maths
  • Making digital movies in ICT
  • Gifted & Talented students showcasing how they are using ICT to encourage and assess creative writing from their peers
  • Healthy eating advice and samples from the Junk Food Roadshow.

By popular demand this year also saw the welcome return of Assault Events, who organised music and dance workshops leading to the catwalk show on Wednesday evening. Our students did a fantastic job, starting with nothing and producing an excellent show with some wonderful outfits. Many thanks to all of our models, musicians, dancers and designers and to the many parents that braved the rain to see the show.
Year 10 students learn about rescue procedures
The local fire service once again gave up their time to demonstrate rescue procedures and how they use the latest emergency equipment. We are very grateful for their continued support.

Staff were asked to nominate hard-working Y10 students, who were rewarded with free driving lessons on the back field at Trent campus. Despite a few near misses and a lack of speed limit signs they did very well and everyone wanted more, with the possible exception of the instructors.

Once again, an enormous ‘thank you’ to all staff, students and parents that took part and made the week so successful. We are now looking forward to our 9th Annual Technology Show in Summer 2009, with the theme 'INTERNATIONALISM'. If anyone would like to offer support or suggestions, please contact:
