Alternative Provision

Over the last decade the need for provision for students who are not always able to comply with a “standard” curriculum has risen. It also should be noted that the offer from the District Inclusion Partnership (DIP) has suffered from severe financial restrictions.

The academy has therefore set up an Alternative Provision unit at the Sixth Form Campus, to provide opportunities for students to remain in mainstream education, that is within the control of the academy. For example, to avoid permanent exclusion; to reduce Elective Home Education; to assist students with SEND access an education that is bespoke for them; to provide extended work experience placements for students at the SFC and in the local vicinity; to offer a curriculum that would still enable Y11 students to complete “core GCSEs” and to offer a wider enhanced curriculum.

Supporting SEMH for those who need it, developing social interaction between peers and staff are also key to supporting the students.

Students at the AP receive careers guidance from our careers adviser to ensure positive destinations post 16,  eg, a Year 11 student who completed his GCSEs then went to BSDC to study Motor Vehicle.

The Alternative provision is led by a fully qualified teacher who is supported by a full time ISA all day. The class teacher is linked to the Maths Faculty for professional development. Whenever necessary, pastoral care is given by the teaching staff present, Head of Year and the Senior Vice Principal who is also responsible for the line management of the provision.

The ground floor room is equipped with an Apple TV, wireless networking, blackout blinds and all of the necessary equipment to teach. The location of the room also allows easy access to catering and washroom facilities. It is also close to the reception area to allow the monitoring of entry/exit of students. In order that the students feel comfortable in accessing the AP curriculum, their day is organised to have separate start/lunch/finish times from the rest of the students at the Sixth Form Campus.
