Year 8 Football team became County Champions
On Monday March 20th, Mr Burrows' Year 8 Football team became County Champions with a thrilling 9-8 penalty shoot-out win over John Taylor.
In a very entertaining game, De Ferrers took the lead through Sanders only for it to be ruled out due to a very delayed offside flag. However, this didn't affect the boys and they retook the lead courtesy of a wonder strike from Kinani, who found the top corner from 20 yards.
John Taylor rallied and almost equalised a few minutes later, only to be denied by an excellent defensive display. Shortly after, the Referee awarded John Taylor a penalty which was calmly slotted home to equalise.
With seconds left in the first half, Galloway beat the left back for pace again and sent in a wicked low drive which Cooper tapped in to retake the lead.
In the second half, the game started to open up a little with more attacking football from John Taylor who still couldn't find a way to beat the De Ferrers defence. Chances came and went and De Ferrers caught John Taylor on the counter attack and could have extended the lead only for a good save from the keeper.
With 5 minutes left, John Taylor swung a corner in and it was powerfully headed home to make it 2-2.
To penalties it went and with the first 6 converted with aplomb, de Ferrers missed the fourth which rattled the bar and gave John Taylor the upper hand. The next two were scored which left John Taylor needing to score to win, however the John Taylor player sent it wildly over the bar. The next few penalties were again unsaveable in sudden death until a John Taylor player missed his penalty ;sending the de Ferrers spectators and team into raptures.
Overall, it was a fantastic final between two good teams in a county final contested between two local Burton schools.
Congratulations to all involved!!
