Apple Distinguished School

Digital success story for The de Ferrers Academy

The de Ferrers Academy is pleased to announce that it has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School for 2018–2020 for its 1:1 iPad programme and use of learning technologies to support all students.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching, and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment.

Principal Nick Holmes said, “On behalf of the staff and students of the Academy I am delighted. The selection of The de Ferrers Academy as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment”.

Teachers have been using iPad and a range of educational apps to provide students with realtime access to multitouch books, online courses and rich, multimedia feedback. In 2017, the Academy was a finalist in the TES Awards for Digital Innovation of the Year for its digital author project with student teachers from The University of Nottingham. The project has helped 50 new teachers become globally published authors of interactive books that are used by Academy students as part of their revision.

Vice Principal Greg Hughes explained that “The de Ferrers Academy is now sharing best practice in what we do with learning technologies with schools and educators across the world, from Ireland and Germany to Hong Kong. I’m also very proud of the partnership we have with The University of Nottingham, to help train the next generation of teachers to become confident users of mobile technology”.
