Success for Young Poet

Student wins Never Such Innocence poetry contest

Earlier in the year, a small group of Year 8 students was selected to participate in a collaboration between the English, history and art departments.  Students spent half a day learning about some of the lesser known heroes of World War One such as nurses and the Scout movement before spending a day creating a poem on these heroes and a day creating a piece of artwork in memory of them.  The work was submitted to the international competition, 'Never Such Innocence'.

Despite there being over 6,700 entries from all of the world, Joel Brassington won the 'Thank You' themed strand of the competition, sponsored by the Royal British Legion, for his age group.  Joel now has the privilege of attending an awards ceremony at the Guard's Chapel at the Wellington Barracks on 24th May with his parents and one of his teachers.  Joel's work will also be featured on the Never Such Innocence website and in their Winners' Booklet.

Joel's poem is entitled 'Forget me Not' and commemorates the contribution of the Gurkhas in World War One.
