The de Ferrers Academy is a highly successful and ambitious 11-18 split-site Academy catering for over 2200 students, situated on the outskirts of Burton-Upon-Trent. We have received national and international recognition for the work we are currently doing on transforming teaching and learning through the use of Apple technology. As the Burton-Upon-Trent Apple Regional Training Centre (RTC), trainees with us will be provided with outstanding opportunities to access and develop their teaching in a modern, forward thinking educational establishment.

The de Ferrers Academy, as you will read in the Ofsted Report of January 2017, is a highly successful Academy, with student outcomes and the quality of teaching, learning and assessment both judged to be Outstanding. Year 7 is significantly over-subscribed annually and demand is growing. The same is true with our Sixth Form. However, we are never complacent and aspire to be outstanding in all that we do. Our aim is simply to be the most successful Academy that we can be. To achieve this we need to achieve excellence in all that we do and then ensure that such levels are maintained and extended.

The Academy is an exciting place to work. We work hard to serve our fantastic students and community. As importantly, it is a happy and exciting environment in which to work. Few colleagues leave, other than for promotion, and many have gone on to Headships and other senior positions across the country.

Our three sites are just a couple of km apart: Years 7 - 8 are taught on the Dove Campus and Years 9 - 11 on the Trent Campus. The Sixth Form now have their own modern Sixth Form Campus in the town centre. There is the usual range of specialist accommodation and we are constantly seeking to update our buildings with the latest technology and facilities.

Learning/Study Centres, one on each Campus, have also been renovated and refurbished. These offer exciting opportunities for dynamic and innovative teaching and contribute to developments in teaching and learning.

The catchment covers a wide area including the outskirts of Burton upon Trent and rural villages to the north and west. Students are friendly and helpful and capable of high achievements both academically and socially, approximately 11% are of Asian origin. An intensive extra-curricular programme exists and students gain recognition at local and national level.

As an Academy we remain committed to providing a curriculum which is broad and balanced and reflects national requirements in Key Stages 3 and 4. Over twenty subjects at Advanced Level, vocational 'A' Levels and the Extended Project Qualification are offered to Post-16 students.

Our aim is to help all our students become confident and successful in all subject areas.

Over recent years de Ferrers has made significant improvements to accommodation and facilities. This has included a major extension to the Dove Campus, refurbishment of specialist rooms and a new Sports Hall on the Trent Campus. A new, state of the art Mathematics block opened in September 2016 and the multi-million pound Sixth Form Campus opened in September 2018..

An extensive whole school database exists and is constantly updated, providing individual student information which is invaluable in supporting teachers and monitoring students' progress.

Learning Technologies are well embedded within the curriculum and many rooms have interactive whiteboards/digital projectors. There are over 1700 iPad in use across the Academy, several hundred PCs and laptops and an extensive network of curriculum and administrative tools. In October 2013 we were appointed as an Apple Regional Training Centre (RTC) and in 2015 we became an Apple Distinguished School (ADS), in light of the transformational work we are doing using Apple technology to redefine teaching and learning.

The student Support and Guidance system is based on Key Stages, with Support & Guidance Leaders assisted by non-teaching Heads of Year and Assistant Heads of Year who coordinate a team of tutors who monitor the academic progress of the students.

There are currently over 230 teaching and support staff. You will be working with a dedicated, hard-working and conscientious team and, as a new colleague, you can expect to benefit from a comprehensive induction and support programme.
