Homework
Homework provides regular opportunities for practice and the development of study skills. Students who complete their homework each week spend more time consolidating knowledge and making additional progress.
At de Ferrers, we aim for our homework to be:
- Accessible: Pitched at the right level, of reasonable length and available on a device.
- Purposeful: Support the curriculum, improve students' long-term memory and develop good habits.
- Accountable: Clear whether it has been completed or not.

Students will be given at least one week to complete their homework. Homework will not be issued or due on a holiday or weekend. However, homework can be set over the holiday period, provided it is issued during and due in term time. This allows students to complete their homework before or after the holiday period and to have a break from homework during the holiday.
Our students are issued with an iPad to support them with their homework, however, not having a working iPad is not an acceptable excuse for not completing homework. All of our homework platforms can be accessed using any web-enabled device. We also offer Homework Club on Dove and Trent campuses before and after school.
How to help
- Please try to provide a calm, quiet space for your child to complete their homework, away from distractions.
- Schedule regular homework study times to help build good habits and effective time management. Allocating specific times for homework completion is likely to lead to higher success rates and avoid homework being completed the night before it is due.
- Students, parents and carers should use the ClassCharts app to view what homework has been set, when it is due and whether it has been completed on time each week.
- Find the time to talk about your child’s homework with them; this will show them you think it’s important, and may help them feel confident about what they are doing.
The homework status categories used by ClassCharts are below. Please note that homework tasks which have been marked as ‘Completed’ have been marked as completed by the student and not their teacher. Therefore, parents should be looking for 'submitted' when looking at ClassCharts to see if homework has been completed by the deadline and not 'completed'.
