P.E.

Welcome to the P.E. Faculty curriculum, which covers the subjects P.E. and Sports.

Curriculum Intent:

PE inspires students to form a life long relationship with sport. This can see the individual experience incredible highs and desperate lows. These experiences build and develop character traits which are crucial in creating a progressive and caring society. PE has the power to equip individuals with the knowledge to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and explore how we can push the human body to new limits, achieving feats that were once thought impossible.

The objective of our curriculum is to ensure that all students who attend The de Ferrers Academy have the opportunity to take part in a wide and varied range of activities during their PE lessons and extracurricular clubs. We aim to develop their practical skills, analysis and tactical awareness within activities in addition to improving their theoretical knowledge and understanding of how to prepare themselves and others in order to perform at optimal levels. 

Our end goal is that all students who attend The de Ferrers Academy leave us with a passion and enthusiasm for at least one sport or physical activity in whichever role (performer, coach, official, leader) they enjoy, thus enabling each student to lead a healthy, active lifestyle throughout their adult life. 

The curriculum is designed to be enjoyable, whilst at the same time develop and stimulate the students; physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. It aims to provide a range of opportunities of learning experiences in games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor education. Students will be encouraged to take on different roles and enjoy physical activity as performers, coaches, officials and leaders.

Curriculum Implementation:

Lessons and schemes/units of work are structured to allow students the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills within a physical education environment. The learning environment is appropriate to the age, maturity and skill level of the students. The atmosphere of lessons is such that students gain confidence in physical activity in a safe environment where student success is positively reinforced.

Students will regularly work in group situations. In many areas the emphasis is on competition, where students are encouraged to be cooperative and tolerant of each other in order to achieve their goal. In all situations empathy is paramount where students cater to the needs of their peers (Work hard, be kind, choose wisely). Through performance, students will be encouraged to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and others.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have 2 hours of PE a week, covering a wide variety of sports and skills. The focus initially is on key concepts and developing core skills, then movies onto more advanced skills and mastery. As student progress during the year, they will develop their skills across a wider variety of topics and sports (not just a linear progression) to develop consistency and confidence as sports people.

In both Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form there are both academic and vocational options for PE, as well as wider involvement in sports through teams, house competitions and other events.
